I’m a 70 year old woman, and I’ve tried trail runners and it just didn’t feel like my ankles were getting enough support. I’m wondering what the experiences are with hikers in my age bracket. Also, I really need the poles–or at least my knees do.

I am, however, completely unaware, after a long search to find it, of any biometrical calculations that led to this number. I suspect that it’s simply something that Ray Jardine made up as a handwavey "this seems to be true" kind of point in his first book, which has now been repeated (often with inflated numbers) like an urban legend among backpackers ever since.

I’d love to hear that I’m wrong. And I don’t doubt for a moment that heavy shoes or boots make you more tired than lightweight shoes. But I think the comparison between weight on your feet and weight on your pack is just baloney.
