Thanks for the good question Dave. I’d be very excited to see a wolf in the wild and not at all worried. They fall under the same category as Cougar danger: they want very little to do with humans and there have been a very small number of incidents involving them over the past twenty years.

From WTA.org – "Because of their low numbers and shy nature, the presence of wolves… has relatively little impact on hikers and backpackers. Hikers concerned about wolves should rest assured that wolves, like most wild animals, avoid humans. In the last 60 years, there have only been two apparent wolf-caused human fatalities in North America, and those occurred in very remote parts of Alaska and Canada… In the extremely unlikely situation that you encounter a wolf or pack at close range: 1) Do not run or turn away
2) If you are approached by a wolf, step toward the wolf, yelling or clapping your hands. 3) Aggressively use poles, rocks, limbs, noisemakers or other handy items to discourage wolves from approaching."

What about encounters with Wolves? With their increasing population in and around Glacier and Yellowstone the odds for encounters are higher. Last year, while at a remote camp site in Glacier, I caught a glimpse of one wolf…wasn’t expecting that, but it made me consider my vulnerability. What are your thoughts on this magnificent animal?? Is bear spray useful? I saw a presentation on an electric fence….works with bears, but certainly adds significant weight and has other issues.
Thanks for some great videos that make you think about various preparations we should take!
