We are excited to be hiking in a week. I am confused regarding best route from Foster Bar back to I5 heading North. What forest road route would you suggest?

I used to white water kayak this section of the river and want to backpack the trail, but have been hesitant because I always hear rattle snakes are common (as they are all over the PNW). Have you actually seen any on this trail – like are they more common here, or is it just a general warning that they’re around?

Thanks Courtney! Happy to help. Yup, no permits necessary, that’s just a general part of our packing list reminders for every trip, but we should probably take it out from the bottom. Thanks for the heads up, and have an excellent trip!

My boyfriend and I have been inspired to spend our week long vacation hiking this trail. Quick question: At the top you mention that this trail is great because no permits are needed but in your packing list under "Other items" you list PERMITS. Could you clarify which permits you need?

Thanks Sophie! Could be a lovely time to hike this trail, just make sure to check the weather and current conditions. It can still be rainy (and sometimes even snowy) that time of year, but it can also be beautiful, so I’d recommend giving it a try. You’ll likely have to pay for a more expensive car shuttle that time of year due to road closures or plan an out-and-back hike, which will make logistics easier anyway. I think you could have a great trip if the weather cooperates. Just make sure to plan accordingly and check the weather forecast and current conditions before your trip. Hope that helps!

Thanks for all of this amazing info! I wonder, would you not recommend back packing the Rogue River trail the last week of March. I was hoping to take my family (Husband, and two kids, 10 and 8) on this trail over spring break. I’m thinking one week shy of April might be an ok time. What do you think?

Thanks!! Sophie Therrell, Eugene, OR

Very beautiful! We were suprised at the amount of goat trails, but seeing those beautiful views and Zane Grays cabin. Priceless!
