They seem pretty comparable with a few design differences, would be interested to hear which design is the better whole package.

Freestanding tents may be lighter but I like the convenience of not having to make sure everything is staked out and being able to set up on tent platforms like they have where I tend to backpack.

That seven-year-old model does also have the problem of being drippy in the rain. I don’t go for long trips and I avoid whenever possible tenting in downpours, so it’s not a dealbreaker, but it is annoying when you have to go out in the middle of the night and it’s raining and then your pjs get wet.

Also, after six years (so, last summer) the ties that hold the flaps up – I agree, definitely convenient! – all fell off. Does this model look more durable?

Good question Jacob. My guess is that they are not planning to do that, but I’m not completely sure. 3-person tents are obviously better for interior space, but semi-freestanding tents tend to be worse in the wind and rain due to their limited pole structure. For that reason, almost all 3-person semi-freestanding tents perform worse than their 2-person brothers in our experience. And usually the customer ratings and sales reflect that too. Anyways, I hope that helps!
