Hi LS, make sure to check out our Nepal Trekking Guide for a lot of helpful info on that subject – https://www.DuskHiker.com/blog/trekking-in-nepal-a-comprehensive-guide. We generally like to travel with as much flexibility as possible, so we did a ton of research beforehand and then showed up to Kathmandu to interview trekking companies and guides. Many travelers don’t have as much time and flexibility, so in that case it can be good to have a full plan in place before you travel. For us it was nice to meet our guide before we set out for two weeks with him and we saved quite a bit of money that way as well. We paid fully up front, which seems like standard practice, but we also traveled with enough cash to give our guide a great tip, which he completely earned. Hope that helps!

Hey Brittany, great question. Make sure to check out our full Nepal Trekking Guide post (https://www.DuskHiker.com/blog/trekking-in-nepal-a-comprehensive-guide) where we outline a bunch of helpful information on Guides. I think your answer is in there, but if you need more help just let us know. Happy hiking!

Same question as LS about the guide. I was quoted an exorbitant amount by an online company and am wondering what kind of ball park figure I can aim for per day? Also, around how much did you spend on food per day?

Namaste!
Brittany

Hi Tracey, thanks so much for the kind note! We probably wouldn’t recommend shortening any treks in Nepal, just because you usually need the extra days for acclimatizing. I think 16 days are required for Manaslu if I remember correctly. I’m sure you could shave off a day or two and you’d probably be fine, but our recommendation is take the suggested days. This will help with acclimatization and any transportation/weather slowdowns you may run across, which does happen. You could look into shortening the end of your track by taking a very bumpy (and maybe expensive) jeep ride once you reach the junction with the Annapurna circuit. We didn’t get to the Nar Phu region but I would guess the culture and scenery is fantastic there. Also, thanks for the coffee offer, extracto is one of our favorites. We are out of town traveling for the next few weeks, so we’ll sadly have to take a rain check. Have a great trip!

Your photos are out of this world (following on Instagram) and your notes are very thorough and helpful. I am headed to Nepal for a yoga/meditation/trekking retreat (2 weeks) mid-Oct and then have about 15 days after that in which my husband will meet me to trek. Looks like it took you 25-28 days for Manaslu/Annapurna Circuit combined. I was curious the break out for just the Manaslu portion and if you felt there was a way to shorten the length – I have read varying reports that can be done within 2 week period. We are also considering Nar Phu and wondered if you had any thoughts or experience with that trek. Would love your thoughts/opinions. We are from the Pacific NW and I would love to buy you a coffee and pick your brain if the chance arises 🙂 –we are over in NE Portland (Extracto is our local coffee joint).

LS again! I had a question about hiring an independent guide. Did you hire yours while you were in Nepal or beforehand? Either way, did you pay them fully in cash up front or in segments? I’m not sure what the protocol is and your feedback would be very helpful as to not accidentally offend our guide! =)

Thanks for the message David. Yup, I’m still using the RX100 and I really like it. I’ve put some tough miles on it and it still continues to pump out quality shots. I’d recommend it to any backpacker looking to keep weight to a minimum and still get crisp photos.
