Hi Dave. There is a massive Alcove half way in the canyon that has the only composting toilet. You can’t miss it. 2nd best option is near JAcob Hamlin Arch but can get quite crowded. 3rd best is Coyote Arch.

Hi Matt. I’ve backpacked this canyon 3 times. For inexperienced hikers, kids, or elderly I would recommend Hurricane Wash. Its the safest of the 3.

Crack in the wall is by far the most epic as far as dropping in. The most important thing once you reach the sand dune is to take the trail to your left not the one straight down that looks the most obvious. We made the mistake of going straight down and yes you cannot access the bottom once you reach the river. Use the gigantic dome mountain in the middle as your marker and then head directly to the left of it.

I documented our mistake on my youtube channel.

Any other questions about the canyon feel free to comment on the video.
Hope this helps!

So… which route did you guys, in fact, do? (In at Crack and out at JHA?) That seems to be a popular route, but… I’ve seen other videos of Hurricane Wash… (out and back or thru and out at another point), and so I was wondering what wold be best. A few key points for me: I would definitely like to be able to set aside time to take the hike up to and under Stevens Arch. Looks amazing, and so I know, geographically, that’s at the beginning if you come down Crack … or at the end, I believe, if you starting from Hurricane. Also … one thing that concerns me… I’ve seen a bit of disparity in videos (of people who’ve started at Crack), when they actually start to naviagate down to the Gulch… it getting a little sketchy for some. Some people seem to wind up on some really steep terrain, some , not as much, thus… I would imagine this all has to do with the navigational aspect/challenge you refer to in the article?? We’re looking to do 3 days/2 nights, ideally, so … any advice you have based on what I’ve mentioned would be greatly appreciated. Oh… one last thing…lol… I saw your pic of a scorpion. Noy a fan of those!!! Were they prevalent? Thanks for your time! -Matt

Hi Dave, we usually don’t recommend specific camps because trip plans are always different and choosing where to camp is half the fun. That said, there are lots of great camping options to choose from in Coyote Gulch, so you really can’t miss. Happy hiking!

Kinda depends on your style and what you’re looking for. If you want more quiet time to chill out, 3 nights would be good. If you want to hike a lot and keep moving, 1-2 nights will work well. I personally might recommend 2 nights to see the entire area and have time for side trips up the Escalante if you like hiking. Hope that helps!

I want to see and experience all 28.4 miles!
