I use bear spray. You should be able to find some good stuff on amazon easily. Hope that helps!

Wild boars are wicked, and the population is exploding in the Buffalo River Wilderness. I also hike the PCT and AT. Any suggestions for mace?

My husband and I are new to hiking and going to do the TA late this year or the next. I’m researching gear items at this point. I enjoyed reading your blog:). -Tonya

Thanks

I can second the Sony recommendation. I’ve got an RX100 II, and it’s a pretty solid piece of kit. It’s fitted with a Zeiss lens(a real one, not a rebranded knockoff), and the weight is pretty friendly. Honest-to-God DSLR gear is a bad pick for most backcountry excursions, based on weight, bulk, and fragility. I’m not the nicest guy to my gear, and I haven’t had to replace this camera since I bought it a couple years ago.

Don’t leave your expensive gear in the beating sun, but locked in your trunk, it should be alright unless you parked in direct sunlight in the middle of the desert for days at a time.

Thanks Holly,

Unfortunately, I’m not really a camera expert. I do LOVE to take photos, but I’m really a novice when it comes to photography. I mostly use point-and-shoot equipment, but I have a really nice point-and-shoot camera with a great photo card. I use the Sony RX100 (http://amzn.to/1FRMv6F) and I absolutely love it. It’s an absolutely fantastic camera that allows me to capture great images while keeping my gear really light and compact. It sounds like your daughter is using DSLR equipment that is a little above my pay grade. Anyway, I hope that helps!
